Questions and Answers

Getting Started

When can I get Stillfold?

Stillfold is coming to iPhone first. It isn’t on the App Store yet. Android comes after iPhone.

What can I keep in it?

The documents a family needs to find quickly: passports, driving licences, visas, ID cards, insurance policies, and birth and marriage certificates. Stillfold has built-in document types for the US, India and Canada, plus general types that fit anywhere.

What’s a shelf?

A shelf is a group of documents you keep together, like “Home”, “Just me” or “Mom & Dad”. Each document on a shelf belongs to one or more people, so you can open a shelf and see everything grouped by person, or by type.

How do I add a document?

Scan it with the camera (Stillfold finds the edges and crops it), choose a photo, import a PDF, or share it to Stillfold from another app like Photos, Files or Mail. When you share from another app you can add it now or save it for later.

Do I need an account?

You sign in with Apple, Google, or a code sent to your email. Your account backs up your shelves and lets you share them with family. It doesn’t give us a way into your documents.

Does it work without internet?

Yes. Your documents are on your phone, so you can open and present them offline. Changes sync when you’re back online.

How much can I store?

Each person has 2 GB for the shelves they create, and a single file can be up to 50 MB. That’s room for a lot of scanned documents.

Privacy and Security

Can Stillfold see my documents?

No. Documents are encrypted on your phone before they’re backed up, and only the phones of people on a shelf hold its key. Our server stores scrambled data it can’t read. The one exception is Auto-fill, which is off unless you turn it on.

How Stillfold keeps documents private

What if Stillfold’s server were hacked?

Whoever broke in would find the same scrambled data we hold, without the keys to open it. Your account details (like your email address) would be exposed, but not your documents.

Is the copy on my phone protected?

Yes. Stillfold’s storage on your phone is encrypted, and app lock can ask for Face ID or your passcode when Stillfold opens.

Are there ads or tracking?

No ads, no tracking, no analytics, and we never sell data. This website doesn’t use cookies either.

Where is my data stored?

The encrypted files are stored with Cloudflare, and your account details are on our server, hosted by Hetzner in Germany (EU). Both only ever hold your documents in scrambled form. Our Privacy Policy lists every service we use.

Family and Sharing

How do I invite someone to a shelf?

Open the shelf, go to its people, and invite them by email. They get a link that works for 14 days. When they open it and sign in with that email address, the shelf appears on their phone.

What can each person do?

Each person on a shelf has a role. A Manager can add and change documents, invite people and decide who can do what. An Editor can add and change documents but can’t invite people or rename the shelf. A Viewer can see and present documents but can’t change anything.

How many people can be on a shelf?

Up to 20.

Can I share one document with someone outside the family?

Yes, with a share link. It opens in any modern web browser, no app needed, and the document is unlocked right there on their screen. You choose how long it works (1, 7 or 30 days), whether it needs a passcode, and whether they can download it. You can turn it off at any time.

Can I see who opened my share link?

No. Stillfold doesn’t track views, for your privacy and theirs.

What’s a packet?

A packet bundles documents from different shelves for one purpose, like a visa appointment or a new job. You can save it as one PDF, send it as one share link, or show it on your phone in Present mode.

Auto-fill Details

What does Auto-fill do?

It reads the names, numbers and dates on a new document and fills in the details for you. Fields it isn’t sure of are marked, so you only need to check those. On a US driver’s licence or state ID, the barcode is read on your phone and used to cross-check the rest.

Is it on by default?

No. Stillfold asks before using it the first time and explains what happens. You can turn it on or off at any time under You, Auto-fill details.

Where does my photo go?

To a secure service that reads it and keeps nothing. Our server holds the picture in memory only while it’s read, and never saves or logs it. For that moment, the picture isn’t covered by Stillfold’s own encryption. Read the details.

What if it gets something wrong?

Check the marked fields first, then fix anything by tapping it. You can always skip Auto-fill and type the details yourself.

Recovery and Devices

I got a new phone. How do I bring my shelves over?

Install Stillfold and sign in. Then bring your key over in one of three ways: from your phone’s own backup (iCloud Keychain on iPhone), by approving the new phone from your old one, or with your recovery code.

I lost my phone. What should I do?

Sign in on another phone and use your recovery code or iCloud Keychain to get back in. Then remove the lost phone under You, Devices, so it’s signed out. Stillfold’s storage on the lost phone is encrypted, and app lock adds another layer.

What is the recovery code?

A code Stillfold gives you when you set up your account, to print or write down and keep somewhere safe. It can bring your key to a new phone when nothing else can.

What if I lose every phone and my recovery code?

Then nobody can recover your documents, including us. We never have your key, so there’s nothing we can reset. Please keep your recovery code somewhere safe, away from your phone.

If family members share a shelf with you, they still have it, and they can invite you again.

Account and Deletion

How do I delete my account?

In the app, open the You tab and tap Delete account. Stillfold shows exactly what will happen, asks you to sign in once more, then deletes your account right away. Step by step.

What happens when I delete my account?

Your account and backup are deleted. Shelves only you are on are deleted with their documents. You leave every shared shelf, which stays with its other members. Your share links stop working, and the copy on your phone is erased. This can’t be undone.

What does signing out do?

Signing out erases this phone’s copy of your shelves. Your backup stays, so signing in again brings them back.

Android

Is there an Android app?

Not yet. Android comes after iPhone. When it’s out, shelves will be shared between iPhone and Android phones the same way.
